Coming Up This WeekSundials and Beakerhead ContinuedYikes! Our Beakerhead sundials have been on hold for the last week or so. The weather wasn't cooperating at all. Today we headed outside to continue our work, however with the rain we had fresh sidewalks to work on and make adjustments based on some things we learned. For example magnetic north vs true north caused us some difficulty with our calculations. Two groups of students took on the challenge to recreate our sundials. One group created a circle for our sun clock and the second group created an ellipse for the sun clock. The circle required a piece of string that was the radius of the circle in order to draw it. Whereas the ellipse required a loop of string and two people standing between the loops. Ms. Jenn and Ms. Tanya were very impressed with the students who took on this task. They worked independently and were able to recreate the correct shape. The plan tomorrow is for students to convert the chalk drawing to paint, add embellishments, and then add in the time markings based on the movement of the sun over the day. Orange Shirt Day PresentationsYesterday we used the 4 square planner to create our Posters and prepare to present our information to Grades 1, 2, 5 and 6. This morning we prepared and practiced. This afternoon we presented. We are excited to see the Orange Shirts on Friday. Terry Fox Run - September 28Bridlewood School will be holding their annual Terry Fox run the afternoon of September 28th. Students will run or walk around the school field for approximately half an hour. Students should dress for the weather and bring proper footwear as this is an outside activity. Students may also bring a water bottle if they'd like. We are encouraging all students to bring a toonie for Terry. Families are welcome to join us as long as parents have their security clearance up to date. Orange Shirt Day - September 29Grade 4 students are learning about the impact of residential schools on our First Nation's People. Orange Shirt Day is a legacy of the St. Joseph Mission (SJM) residential school. Please check out the webpage for a video and more information. Rooms 1 and 2 plan to wear an orange shirt on September 29th to contribute to the goal of reconciliation. UpdatesOpen House Thursday September 21, 2017 (Half Day for Students) No School on Friday September 22, 2017 Shi-shi-etkoPlace Value YahtzeeEveryone LOVES an exciting game of Yahtzee! For this version, all you need is 4 six-sided dice and a score card. Our version lets our students review and practice their place value skills. We limited today's game to 4-digit numbers but will be adding on to include 5-digit numbers and even decimals to the hundredth place value. When playing students need to think about the best way to use the roll to fill in their cards. It is important to consider how easy or difficult it might be to get numbers that fulfill the requirements of the answer slot. So, not only do students have to use place value to write a number that meets the criteria given, but they also need to be able to say the number correctly. Players can say, "I have...4-thousand 5-hundred thirty-six." "What number did you choose to use?" Students should be intentional about correctly naming their number, as this allows them to not just think about the digits they chose, but also about how the numbers are connected to their place value. Place Value Yahtzee Score Card (4-digits)Place Value MatGlurb UpdateStudents have been working hard creating, sewing, and stuffing their glurbs. Some students are finished and others are in the last stages of the process. We even have some glurbs starting their learning journeys and some starting to explore our classroom. Students will be writing a letter of introduction in order to have them ready to meet you Thursday night at the open house. As well, students are beginning to think about how their glurb can do a small action that will have a BIG impact. Our Graphing JourneyStudents worked in groups to turn their post it note graphs into bar graphs. Things that matter when making a graph include: a title, labeling the axes, writing the scale on the y-axis on the line, putting equal spaces between each bar, and asking 5 questions that can be answered using the graph.
