UPCOMING EVENTS Open House (September 20 5-6:30pm) Field Trip (Open Minds/Calgary Campus)
School Pictures (September 24) Special Lunch (September 26) Orange Shirt Day (wear an orange shirt day Friday, September 28) Welcome to Grade 4! NoteDear Grade 4 Families, Welcome to Grade 4! We (Ms. Jenn and Ms. Tanya) are excited to be your guides on this learning adventure. Fourth grade is full of exciting adventures and hands-on learning opportunities. We already have our first field trip of the year planned and we hope it will inspire you to see what you can do with a chance over the next 10 months. We (Ms. Jenn and Ms. Tanya) work together in a shared learning space in rooms 1 and 2. We share EVERYTHING (as Robert Munsch would say). We even share our students. This is our second year co-teaching and we have found our co-teaching arrangement to be supportive of meeting the learning needs of all our students. In order to help you get to know us, we would like to share some information about us: Ms. Jenn has been teaching at Bridlewood School for 7 years. She has taught kindergarten, grade 1, and grade 4. This is Ms. Jenn's 5th year in grade 4. Outside of school, Ms. Jenn enjoys spending time with her family, and dog. She also rides her bike to get exercise. Although she also enjoys reading she much prefers to write and draw. Did you know Ms. Jenn published a book? Ask her about it and maybe she will read it to the class. This is Ms. Tanya's third year at Bridlewood and third year teaching grade 4. Ms. Tanya has been teaching 23 years and has taught grades 2, 4, 7, and 9. Ms. Tanya enjoys spending time with her family including her bearded dragon, and spins to stay healthy and fit. She is a self-described book worm. Rooms 1 and 2 have two student teachers this year. They are with us for the month of September, once a week from October to December, and again they are with us all of January until mid-February. Their names are Ms. Dominika Kierecka and Ms. Alex Wood. They are both looking forward to getting to know the students and their families and being a part of the learning journey. We blog to share upcoming events and what we are learning about in the classroom. Please check the blog a couple of times of week so you know what is coming up. You can find our blog on the school website or use this direct link https://bws-grade4.weebly.com<https://bws-grade4.weebly.com/> The first day of school is Tuesday, September 4th. We will be anxiously awaiting your arrival at the playground doors in the morning. The day begins at 8:15am and finishes at 3:10pm. Your parents can meet you at these doors at the end of the day as well. For the first day of school, please remember to bring a pair of indoor shoes, a morning snack, and a lunch. As well, dress for the weather as we plan to be outside for both recess and lunch. Grade 4 students go outside at 11:45am to play and come back into the school to eat their lunch at 12:10pm. Last year, Bridlewood School began on their journey of empathy by reading the book, What Matters. Students in all grades made connections and created a path that allowed them to explore what matters in their world. This year we begin by continuing our journey into Empathy and will be going to Open Minds School in September. Open Minds School is a week-long learning experience in the Calgary community. We hope to develop and grow empathy and perspective taking through the stories of Calgary and its communities. More information will be coming home the first week of school. If you are available to support our learning during the week of September 17-20, September 24, or October 9 and would like to join us in the beginning of Grade 4 Journey as a volunteer for this trip please contact us at [email protected] or [email protected] We are excited to get to know each of our grade 4 families. If you have any questions, please email us directly or give us a call at the school. Ms. Jenn Barge and Ms. Tanya Faulkner Homework Expectations in Rooms 1/2We believe students work hard at school and should have time to play at home and spend time with their families. If you are looking for ways to support us in the classroom at home, we would like to suggest you and your child read a great book together before bed and work on their basic math facts for addition (finding 10, doubles, doubles plus one, doubles plus two, etc), subtraction (related subtraction facts), multiplication (up to 9x9), and related division facts. What Do You Do With a Chance? This is Bridlewood School’s book this year. It is a story about a boy who takes a chance and fails. He then is too frightened to take another chance. Eventually, he talks himself into trying again and is successful. Before reading the book, we looked at the artifacts below. Students shared what these objects could be used for or a personal story that connected them to the object. While reading the book, students became detectives looking for the artifacts in the story. They saw how the author used the artifact to show how taking a chance is a good thing. How do you think each of these artifacts is representative to taking a chance? Crenshaw by Katherine ApplegateToday we looked at another set of artifacts: a guitar, a van, a garage sale sign, a cat, and a backpack. Students shared what they thought Crenshaw was going to be about based on these artifacts. While Ms. Tanya read the story, Ms. Jenn and the students listened and captured images they saw in their head and words that stuck in their visual journal as a graffiti page. Take a peek at Ms.Jenn’s sample below for chapters 1 - 7. Ms. K read Crenshaw today while Ms. Wood sketched on her graffiti page. We learned that Ms K. has a clear and expressive reading voice. We also learned that Ms. Wood is a very good sketcher. In fact, she went to Alberta College of Art and Design (ACAD) prior to her journey to become a teacher. GraphingStudents has shared their favorite sport or activity earlier this week. Today we used this information to create a graph. Graphs are a way we can organize data in a way that makes sense. Students began by sorting the information into categories. Once they had organized the information into categories we translated the data into a bar graph. Notice that we have a x-axis and y-axis that are labeled. We have a title, the date and our name on our work. Next we included a scale on the y-axis that makes sense (and represents the number of people) and put the categories on the x-axis. Finally, we used the data to graph 5 favorite sports or activities.
