Design ThinkingWe are building our optic devices to help Mr. Bhachu and Ms. Braben see out of their windows. I need to bend light so that they can get a clear picture of the weather outside. Our first song is by The Rural Alberta Advantage - Frank, AB. Light and Shadow StoriesToday we began getting ready for representing our Light and Shadow stories. We need to finish our rhyming couplet with our partner. As we completed that, we needed to create our puppets to bring our shadow stories to life. Our challenge is to use our Grasslands Research, and our knowledge of Light and Shadow to share about what matters in the Grasslands. We are learning about Courage and moving into humility. I can share with you how Roz or another character uses courage or humility in the story. Number VisualsThe video shares some important new research on the power of engaging with numbers and symbols visually, which involves brain crossing. Some people have been given unhelpful ideas that they are visual learners or not visual learners. The video explains that it is helpful for all students to think visually about mathematics, and today’s activity is a perfect opportunity for this. This video has some complex ideas in a small space of time. 1. Ask me what number each visual represents. 2. Ask me what I see in the number visuals? Ask me if I noticed anything interesting about the way numbers are shown? 3. Ask me what interesting patterns I found. I may have used colors to see them. 4 Maybe we can work together to see how we could represent 29 and 30 too. Relief Map of AlbertaWhat is a relief map? It is a a map model with elevations and depressions representing hills and valleys, typically on an exaggerated relative scale. Students looked at a shaded relief map to determine how the landforms in Alberta looked. They discussed what the shading meant and identified where the landforms were low and where they were high. We then used clay to build a 3D representation of the 2D map to demonstrate our ability to visualize Alberta. (Social Studies, Math) How did I do in representing the different landforms using the 2D reference map? Do I show the changes in elevation? How could I adjust my map to make it better? Developing VocabularyStudents used a 4-square organizer to show their understanding of a word they heard during the reading of The Wild Robot. They had to choose a word, define the word, write a sentence using the word, and draw a picture showing the meaning of the word. |
