UpdatesOpen House Thursday September 21, 2017 (Half Day for Students) No School on Friday September 22, 2017 Shi-shi-etkoPlace Value YahtzeeEveryone LOVES an exciting game of Yahtzee! For this version, all you need is 4 six-sided dice and a score card. Our version lets our students review and practice their place value skills. We limited today's game to 4-digit numbers but will be adding on to include 5-digit numbers and even decimals to the hundredth place value. When playing students need to think about the best way to use the roll to fill in their cards. It is important to consider how easy or difficult it might be to get numbers that fulfill the requirements of the answer slot. So, not only do students have to use place value to write a number that meets the criteria given, but they also need to be able to say the number correctly. Players can say, "I have...4-thousand 5-hundred thirty-six." "What number did you choose to use?" Students should be intentional about correctly naming their number, as this allows them to not just think about the digits they chose, but also about how the numbers are connected to their place value. Some students are finished and others are in the last stages of the process. We even have some glurbs starting their learning journeys and some starting to explore our classroom. Students will be writing a letter of introduction in order to have them ready to meet you Thursday night at the open house. As well, students are beginning to think about how their glurb can do a small action that will have a BIG impact. Our Graphing JourneyStudents worked in groups to turn their post it note graphs into bar graphs. Things that matter when making a graph include: a title, labeling the axes, writing the scale on the y-axis on the line, putting equal spaces between each bar, and asking 5 questions that can be answered using the graph.
