It is absolutely stunning. It took about an hour to drive out and then another hour back to the school. It will be important for the students to be ready to go on the morning of May 15th so we can load the buses quickly. Cat, one of our education leaders, took us on a short walk and showed us some of the features of the area and talked about the activities we would experience. The most important thing we learned is where the exit is to the south loop of the trail is located. This is where Cat will meet us on May 15th. There are a few things that are important for our students to know and our parent volunteers: - There is no cell service in the demonstration forest, but the Inside Education team has a beacon with a homing button and a forestry radio if we need it. - Students will be expected to come with a backpack and they will carry it with them all day. This means students should make sure they clean out their backpack of anything not needed. - Students and parent volunteers will need to pack a litter-less lunch and bring their own drinking water. There are not any trash bins for garbage on site. This means if you bring it in, you take it home with you. As well, there is no place to fill a water bottle. Please ensure your child has a filled 1-litre water bottle for this trip. - Bathrooms are as Cat described, rustic. This means they are outhouses if you are unfamiliar with this term. - Students and parent volunteers will need to dress in layers and have a proper jacket and toque in their backpack. No shorts as it is cooler here than it will be in Calgary. Student also need proper running shoes for walking around for the day. It is going to be a great day! See the list below to help you decide what you need to bring on the trip. Agriculture in the ClassroomDavid was a wealth of information today and an interesting speaker. He has a PhD in agriculture. Agriculture is the bringing of food and other products from farms to consumer. David discussed how agriculture has changed as cities and populations have grown. We now have less land than we used to per person - about half. But, farmers need to produce more food in order to feed the growing population. DYK that machines like tractors, combines, and milking machines make farmers more efficient at their jobs so they can feed more people? We reviewed that plants require the sun, water, soil, oxygen and carbon dioxide to grow. Plants use the sun to create sugar through the process of photosynthesis. DYK plants are the bottom of the food chain? Soil is made up of a variety of components. Soil has gravel, sand, silt, clay, and organic matter in it. The organic matter is the stuff that makes soil look black or brown. Organic matter is made through the decomposition or composting of organic matter by fungi, bacteria, and even earthworms. David talked about the crops found in Alberta and we looked at the different seeds - oats, canola, wheat, and barley. David talked about what foods are fruit - DYK all fruits come from flowers? That means peas are fruit! Fun Fact: Alberta is the largest producer of canola in the world.. We learned about all the different jobs in agriculture. It’s hard to believe there are so many jobs - farmer, mechanic, machine operator, water specialist, pig farmer, cattle rancher, chicken farmer, sheep farmer, egg farmer, dairy farmer, scientist, and researcher. Some other things we discussed. Ask your child if you want to hear what David had to say?
The Art of Conversationwhen trying to make new friends, having a conversation is an important first step. Having a conversation let’s us find things we have in common. It provides a common experience. But, having a conversation is tricky - it is actually like playing catch. You have to ask a question to help the conversation move forward to find things you might have in common. Students engaged in conversations like they were playing catch. If the person students were talking to didn’t ask a question, it meant the beanbag fell to the floor. Students learned about themselves as conversationalists. Some found they forgot to ask a question and some felt they had to decide the line of questioning. Having conversations is a great skill to practice! We are very proud of Alina. Congratulations! If you want to read of the stories that were winners, here is the link to the website: www.yabs.ab.ca/youngwriters.php Here is Alina's story: Talking Books Long ago Rainbow Ally was a village with lovely flowers and everyone loved to read. A little Library across the river was always filled with joy. Bella took her little sister Rosy to the Library all the time. They would read books and then Rosy would take home a book. One day a tall man appeared at Rainbow Alley and introduced technology! As time went by people were addicted to Iphones, Ipads, and computers. Rosy was lonely because her big sister wasn't taking her to the Library anymore. As time went by the books started feeling left out and sad. They started talking to each other. “Will people read us anymore?” The oldest one asked concerned. “I'm sure they will” the king of books replied . “I'm leaving to go find Rosy!” the youngest book shouted. “Inky, ARE YOU CRAZY?” The king of books yelled worriedly. “People don’t know us books can talk. Besides, we’re safe here.” Inky was thinking to herself that she should go find Rosy when all the books are sleeping. On the other side of the river Rosy was fast asleep in her bed. Inky slowly got up and sneaked out of the library. “Now I can go get Rosy” she whispered. Inky floated across the river and into the village right outside Rosy’s house. Inky noticed the door was locked so she needed to find the window to Rosy’s bedroom. “What’s that?” Rosy said. She slowly peeked through the closet but nothing was there. “What's that noisy sound?” she said again. “Yes it’s working I’m getting Rosy to help us, if only I can bang a little louder.” said Inky. Rosy found the book but what is she going to think if she hears the book talk? “Hello my name is Inky, it’s nice to meet you.” Inky shivered, it was her first time talking to a human. “You can talk?” Rosy froze. “Yes I can” whispered Inky. “Neat” Rosy complimented. “Thank you, but us books need your help” spoke Inky worriedly. “Why?” Rosy was confused. “Because we are getting sad and why do you ask? well, Technology!” Inky shouted. “What?” Rosy was more than confused she didn’t know what to think. “It’s making us sad because people don't read us anymore” Inky announced without taking a breath. “Ok I’ll help you” Rosy said in surprise. “YOU WILL?” Inky wondered if she was lying. But, she nods her head. “Ok” Inky agreed with her. “Well there's a problem. Inky didn't want to tell her. “What's that?” Rosy said confused. “Well, the bees have made a really big hive and you probably might not be able to pass it” Inky said with no hope. “I mean...we might be able to?” said Rosy. “Well I guess there's no harm in trying” Inky spoke with pride. “Hmm? I got It! What If we get a flower and distract them with it so then we could pass the hive.” Rosy said. “Let's do it” Inky shouted. The two went off and they came to the hive. “Well I’ll hold the flower because I have hands” Rosy shouted. “Ahh they’re not going to stop” Inky shouted back. “OK come back we need to think of another plan” Inky said. “Ok” said Rosy, “what’s the next plan?” “I will go get my book friends and we can float you over!” said Inky. Inky went off to get the books. A little while later they returned to Rosy. “Wow that’s a lot of books!” said Rosy. Then, all at the same time the books asked Rosy a question “will people read us again?” Rosy replied “I don’t know but, I’ll do everything I can to help you guys out.” “Alright, are you guys ready to lift me up over this beehive?” Rosy shouted excitedly. The books replied, “we’re ready when you are!” Once they passed the hive they floated for a while and slowed down to a steady stop when they reached the library. “Well here we are” said Inky. Rosy looks around “wow I haven’t been here in a while. It’s amazing.” “You can say that again” Inky replied. The two went to the king of books. “Come on hurry up!” Rosy shouted. “I’m coming, I’m coming just slow down” Inky called back. BOOM POW SMASH!!!!! Rosy kept knocking over books since she was in such a hurry. “I’m sorry your majesty” Inky apologizes for Rosy. “Ha ha ha, it’s ok Inky. I knew you left during the night.” “I’m sorry your majesty I thought I could go get help. This is Rosy and we think she can help us.” The king does not look happy and in a deep mad voice he says “I told you not to talk to humans because people were not supposed to know we can talk! But, I guess there is not much we can do about this now. Anyways hello Rosy I am the king of books. I recognize you...you used to come here with your sister.” “Yes you’re right! I used to read you all the time! I really want to help you guys but we need to make sure I am back home before it turns light outside.” The king announces in a strong voice “ATTENTION ALL BOOKS this is Rosy and she is here to help us!” The king of books pulls out a map “here is the plan, we are going to find the wizard who will use his magic to solve our problem. This map will lead you. Rosy and Inky, I am counting on you both to save us all.” First they need to go to the cave. Humming along the path until they couldn’t see a thing. “AHHH it’s pitch black in here!” they both shout. “I think we found the cave” Rosy exclaimed. They sure did. “How are we going to get out?” Rosy asks. “I have an idea. We can use my pictures” Inky replied. “Umm what pictures?” Rosy says confused. “Well, I am a picture book which means my pictures can come to life and I have a picture of a flashlight.” So they flipped the page to the picture of a flashlight and wished for it to come to life. POOF the flashlight came to life. They turned the flashlight on and used to find their way out. The cave was one straight line to get out but it sure was scary. “I’m so happy we made it out of that cave” said Rosy happily. The two went on and came to the lake which was their next stop on the map. “How do we get across the lake?” Inky asked. “I have an idea...let’s use a picture of a boat from your book.” Inky replied “yes I do have a picture of a boat.” Inky flipped to the page where the boat was supposed to be. “Wait, it’s not there. Looks like the page was ripped out.” she says shaking. “Don’t worry Inky, when we get to the wizard he will fix it.” “You’re right” said Inky worriedly. Rosy looked around and just when she was about to go back she spotted a ship in the water sailing toward her. “Inky look over there!” It wasn’t just any ship, it was a pirate ship. “Shiver me timbers, what are you doing on my shore” said a loud voice coming from the ship. Inky and Rosy replied “well we were going to find the wizard. Will you take us on your boat across the lake?” “Well I guess so” said the pirate loudly. Rosy and Inky thanked the pirate. “We always like having visitors. What are your names?” asked the pirate. “My name is Rosy and this is my friend Inky. She is a talking book.” “My name is Hook and these are my pirate pals” the pirate said pointing to the other pirates. The pirate welcomed Rosy and Inky aboard and started sailing. They went on until they came to a shark. “Inky do you have a picture of a fish so we can distract the shark?” asked Rosy. “I sure do, here you go” Inky handed Rosy the fish. “Thank you. Hey shark look what I’ve got.” Rosy got rid of the shark and everybody cheered her. The boat came to a stop and there was a cave right in front of them. “In there let’s go!” called Inky. The two of them got off the boat and thanked the pirates again. They went into the cave and POOF magic dust sparkled around them. The wizard appeared “what are you guys doing here?” he asked. “Well we want people to like reading books again and also for you to fix the boat in my picture book” said Inky. “I guess I could do something about that” and with a poof Rosy and Inky were back outside the library and people were heading for the library. Rosy ran off home to be back on time and loved the adventure she just had with one of her great friends. Whenever she took home a book, she always chose Inky. We focused on math learning in grade 4. Thank-you to all our amazing families who were able to come out and explore math with their child. If you weren't able to join us, we have included pictures of our information posters and activities below. Feel free to pick a few and work through them with your child if you'd like to experience what we did or you'd just like another crack at the activities. Friendology 101- Time to Get REAL!We are diving into Friendship 101 and giving our students the most special, precious gift of all...the foundation they need to develop healthy, happy relationships for the rest of their lives. Lesson 1 focuses on self-awareness, teaching children to ‘get real’ about who they are. In order to create healthy friendships, we need students to first look inward and shine a light on their strengths. Students will learn that character is what matters most and they have the power to be the best version of themselves. Students brainstormed what they thought the "perfect girl" or "perfect guy" looked like, behaved like, and what their friendships were like. Here is what the students in rooms 1 and 2 said about the "perfect girl" and "perfect guy" - as you can see, our students' responses were quite perceptive. Think About...This evening take some time and think about What you like about yourself and what you don't like about yourself. Tomorrow morning you will be given time as part of your morning bell work to complete the activity above. RespectRespect was the word and action of the day. There were some challenges at lunch that after a discussion we realized that respect may be the solution. We began learning about Respect this morning as part of our 7 Sacred Teachings. We used the inside out technique to create our bison and are beginning to brainstorm what respect means. When we discussed our lunchroom problem this afternoon we realized that respect for our space, ourselves and our peers and supervisors will help us to solve this problem and hopefully avoid future problems.
We can share what we think Respect is and how we might show respect as well as how it can help solve the lunchroom problem. |
