Sound KreationsAs promised from Ms. Swanson: Math Basic Fact Practice - GameWhy use paragraphs? One of the skills grade 4 students are working to develop when writing is using paragraphs to organize their writing. We looked at two passages, one with paragraphs and one without to see how it impacted our ability to read and understand a text. We used Jennifer Laffin's work to better understand when a new paragraph would be warranted.
Paragraphs: Give Us a Break! By Jennifer Laffin (January 17, 2018) www.teachwrite.org Using paragraphs correctly is an important skill for all writers because it makes the reader’s job much easier and more pleasant. Paragraphs exist to give the readers’ eyes a rest and a few seconds to process what they’ve read before they start the next line. Paragraphs signal that a change is coming. They tie common sentences together in one neat little area. Readers expect them. Readers need them. When they are missing, it is noticed. But how do writers know when to start a new paragraph? Use the New-New Rule: New idea = New paragraph New character speaking = New paragraph New place = New paragraph New information = New paragraph New focus point = New paragraph New character enters the scene = New paragraph Comments are closed.
