From the office...Parents & Guardians This is a reminder, that tomorrow Friday 17th November this is NO school for our students, it is a PD day for our teaching and support staff. Enjoy your long weekend, stay warm. Design Thinking Building MaterialsWe are going to start building prototypes to solve the problem we have been discussing: What can we do for Mr. Bhachu and Ms. Braben to be able to see out of their window? We will need materials... - cardboard (cereal boxes, shoe boxes) - reflective materials (CDs, mirrors) If you have anything that you believe might help you build, please bring it in. Remember to ask mom/dad first! November 16th is Children’s Grief Awareness DayOne of our students would like to acknowledge Children’s Grief Awareness Day. He is asking everyone in rooms 1 and 2 to wear blue tomorrow. Here is the link www.childrensgriefawarenessday.org/cgad2/index.shtml Thank-you Fish in a TreeTake a look at the start of our Fish in a Tree representations. Our job is to show the main ideas, describe a character, make a connection and represent things that stick (words, feelings, scenes etc.). As we took this work on we were able to share first, then work, take a gallery walk and then back to work. Multiplication with the Area ModelStudents played a game that allowed them to connect basic multiplication facts to a picture. They need to role the dice two times to get their dimensions. Students engaged in a discussion around what is 1D, 2D and 3D. In the area model students are working in 2D and learning how the area model relates to multiplicative thinking (circle and stars, multiplication, repeated addition). Math TalkCan you explain which one you think doesn't belong?
Is your response based on your knowledge of math? Is there one right answer? Welcome Ms. Rebecca and Ms. KangOur student teacher's joined us for the first time today. They will be with us everyday until early December. Today we learned that Ms. Kang loves cats, and art (and SCIENCE), and Ms. Rebecca has 3 kids and loves to travel and she has been to China. Ms. Rebecca and her family also love to ski. Welcome Ms. Kang and Ms. Rebecca. The Wild RobotThe Wild Robot is our next read aloud book. We made some predictions based on some of the illustrations in the book. Ask me what I think will happen? Peter Brown is the author who created this story. Book ClubToday we had our first book club. We discussed some questions with our table group while we had a snack of cheese crackers, juice, and fruit. We shared some connections we made. We were all eager to share who we would have dinner with and why. Some of us picked Albert because he is so smart and could help us with school. Some of us picked Ally so we could help her or she could help us understand what reading is like with dyslexia. Some of us picked Shay- wanting to understand why she is so mean to the other kids? Light and Shadow- Reflection and RefractionWe discovered that light can bend and and reflect. Ask what each of these pictures is showing. I can tell you that light bends because it looks like the straw changed in shape but it didn't. It is like an illusion. I can tell you light reflects because I can hit a target behind me using a mirror and can create a kaleidoscope. Symbols of PeaceIn preparation for our Remeberance Day assembly, we have been learning about the significance of this day. We have read books and watched videos to help us better understand the reasons for war and what these soldiers give up to protect our freedom. We explored different symbols of peace in art. We used two techniques to create our art pieces. We used an oil pastels to create our symbols and then we used watercolors to create the background. Several techniques were at play with this paint resist. First, we had to understand the interaction between the oil pastels and the water based paints. That is, oil repels water. Next, we had to learn how watercolors can be applied to watercolor paper. There are three techniques: 1. Dry paper, dry brush 2. Wet paper, wet brush 3. Dry paper, wet brush. Each of these techniques creates a different effect for the background. Remembrance DayOur school will be honouring Remembrance Day this Friday. We will have an assembly and will participate in a moment of silence as close to 11:00am as we can. Families are welcome to join us.
