All students should have clean dry socks. Unfortunately, if students do not have socks, they won’t be able to use the skates provided. Alien In-line provides protective gear for each student (knee pads, elbow pads, wrist guards, helmet). If your child/children have certified helmets at home, they are encouraged to bring them to school labeled with their name on it. Students are required to wear protective gear at all times to keep them safe. We recommend that you as parents, reinforce this message at home please. Please help your child/ren know their shoe size before they come. Thank you Celebration of LearningGrade 6 Social Action CommitteeEven though spring hasn’t really sprung, we are encouraging spring cleaning to start early! This is the Local Fundraising Social Action Team! We are a team comprised of grade 6 students at Bridlewood School. As our local initiative, we are preparing to donate and raise funds for Alpha House. This is an organization made to help people with various addictions. The facility provides resources to support mental health and also give beds and food to the people who need it most. We are going to start raising money by holding a used book sale at Bridlewood School (and a bake sale is coming soon too!). Students can donate gently used children books to help this non-profit organization. Please give your donated books to your teachers, and the Social Action team will organize and collect them. Thank you to those who have already brought books in for us. WE ARE ACCEPTING GENTLY USED CHILDREN'S BOOKS FROM NOW UNTIL APRIL 19th! We will hold our used book sale the following week. For more information about the Alpha House, please visit http://alphahouse.com. Thank you in advance for your support! All money raised will go to Alpha House, an organization that supports individuals with various addictions. Our goal is to raise $1800. For more information on Alpha House, please visit http://alphahouse.com. Thank you for your support, The Grade 6 Local Social Action Team One Point Perspective DrawingsWe worked on one-point drawings today. The goal, to show perspective from the center. First, we made a circle using some type of tracer. Second, we drew in pie shapes using the center of the circle as the midpoint. Third, we drew our numbers making sure to ground them to the bottom of the circle thus making them larger on the bottom and smaller on the top. Fourth, we erased our pie lines. Fifth, we used water colour pencils to colour the numbers. Sixth, we used the water colour pencils to colour the background. Finally, we used a black water colour pencil to outline the circle and the numbers to finish it off. Can you think of more examples? Mondrian ArtIf you didn't get a chance to pop in for conferences in March, you missed our Mondrian inspired art pieces. We started by creating a one metre squared square out of 2 pieces of chart paper. Then we divided it into 100 equal squares (essentially creating a 100 chart). Students decided how they would like to paint it based on Mondrian's work. Students then painted their masterpieces remember that they could only have squares and rectangles. The lines needed to be straight and they could only use red, blue, yellow, white, and black for colour. We have since hung them on our walls in the classroom. They are absolutely beautiful. Learning About DecimalsDecimal Place Value YahtzeeStudents practiced writing numbers as decimals using place value to guide them. Place Value Yahtzee is a great way to practice. All you need is a score card and 5 dice. You could change it up and create your own game board or even add more dice to work with different numbers. From the Grade 6 Social Action Local Fundraising Team The Birth of the CPRStudents are working towards creating a visual representation from presentation on the Birth of the CPR. Here are some works in progress... Preparing for ArtfeltWe investigated Tipi designs. We learned that most tipi's are white or undecorated on the outside. According to Blackfoot tradition, you could only paint the outside of your tipi if you were given the design, either by another person or the spirit world. We also learned that the bottom of the tipi design represents the Earth, the middle of the tipi represents animal spirits and the top of the tipi represents the sky spirits. Students used this information and the different designs to create their own tipis. Our goal was to gift the tipis to someone else in the class for felting tomorrow. Here are some pictures of the students' designs... Alberta Landscapes and TipisMs White-Tucker was in today as the expert from ArtFelt Studios to lead us through the process of the wet felting of an Alberta landscape with a tipi. Wet felting is truly a whole body experience with all the agitating and rolling we had to do in order to create felt out of wool. Everyone's art turned out beautifully. Each piece included the rocky mountains, grass, a river or lake, and a tipi. Tipi's had at least one design from the gifted design students were given. A look ahead...Jersey Day for Humboldt (April 12)
