Next Week- Friday October 26 is PD day Exploding Dots - The 10 -- 1 Machine and ADDITION The 10 -- 1 machine What's Happening? Students shared: - The 10 -- 1 machine is a lot like the 2 -- 1 machine except now instead of 2 dots exploding to 1 dot you need 10 dots to explode into the next box. - This machine explodes to a new box when you have more than 10 dots. - If you only have 2 dots you can't explode. The 2 dots stay in their box because they are stable. - If you have more than 10 dots then the machine is unstable and we need to explode to make it stable. Practice with different machines using this link: www.explodingdots.org/g/spicy-catfish-94/station/I2SD ADDITION https://www.explodingdots.org/g/tiny-mule-32/station/13S7 https://www.explodingdots.org/g/spicy-catfish-94/station/I3S7 We explored addition using the 10 -- 1 machine in exploding dots. We challenged ourselves using the link below to practice addition. We need to first solve in our books then use the machine. www.explodingdots.org/g/spicy-catfish-94/station/JustPlayAddition Scholastic Book OrdersScholastic Book orders came home today. Students should pay attention to headings, titles, captions and text features to support their comprehension and understanding of the text. During this first read students should be asking themselves or their partner questions like: What does that word mean? (ie. vast) What clues can I find to help me figure out this word? (ie. vast) What is important from the section I just read? Does what I read make sense to me? What information do I think I need to remember in order to retell this text with the BIG ideas? When they get their questions they should read the questions in order to know what information they need to find or recall. If they are recalling then they will need to use their memory and questioning to answer as best they can with detail from the text. If they are able to keep the document then they need to use their questioning to efficiently find the heading or part of the text to find the answer. It is important that students answer using their own words if they are asked to use sentences. When using their own words it demonstrates that the understood what they have read. Amal UnboundWe have connected with another Grade 4 class from somewhere in the United States. Stay tuned for some clues so that we can figure out where they are in the world. Here are some clues- Can you figure out where our buddy class lives?:
The MIPIThis year, we will be using a new tool the Math Intervention/Programming Instrument, or MIPI for short. Students will complete a short assessment on math concepts they learned last school year. So, for example, a student in Grade 4 will answer a series of questions based on what they learned in Grade 3. The results will not count toward students’ grades. There’s no need to study ahead of time. This tool is simply a way to help teachers know where each student is in their math knowledge and skills and tell us if students need more help in math. This is all about strengthening the school's work to improve math programming and support for students. As this is the first year we will be using this tool, we will watch how things go and make changes as needed. If you have any questions on the MIPI, please don’t hesitate to contact your principal or child’s teacher. FriendologyFriendology is a health curriculum that provides students with skills and strategies that will support them in building positive relationships through their entire life. Today we began by being honest with ourselves and identifying our view of the 'perfect girl' and the 'perfect boy'. We talked about stereotypes (or lies) that exist in our world and how they are shaped through both our experiences and media. Use the link below to view the short video called The Lie and talk about the stereotypes these children are sharing through poetry. vimeo.com/182020903 The Secret PathToday we explored Residential schools in Canada through the perspective Chanie Wenjack. We learned that we talk about our history in order to learn from it. Chanie's story is tragic and we all wonder about how we can make a difference and support survivors. Personification PoetryPersonification is when you give an inanimate object human characteristics. It is a great tool for poetry and we used it today to create a poem. Our job was to personify an object and create a poem that would allow you to infer what that object is. The poems below were written by . some students in our school. Poem 1- I might be heavyI might be heavy might be light. I carry your homework, What a delight. When you get home, You hook me up. The next morning, You put me back on, You pass the test, now what? You took me Home you got all dressed in something called Pyjamas. What am I going to do next? Poem 2- There's a bum on my faceI'm a .circular small cylinder I can be red blue or light blue My bottom can be dirty I blow air and I'm thankful I'm not sat on now. I feel kind a squished though. Oh No here they come! YOU SHOULDN'T HAVE SAT ON ME because I DON'T WANT TO SEE YOUR BUM! Okay Okay But Help Me... Owie! I feel offended and hurt now Yay I'm being put away! Poem 3- I am wet, big and beautifulI am wet, big and beautiful. I can be calm, and I can be rough. You might like to hear the beautiful sound I make. SHhhhhh-shhh. My beautiful sound can be relaxing. I can feel dizzy, mad, and you will never know why. I can wash you out if your not careful when you play with me. Just go with the flow. Just chill, relax and stop. Some people like to Splash in me. You might like me if your a fan of water. Poem 4- Personification PoemI feel famous,
I'm excited to be used again. I spit out water, Ic an also torture you with the heat of the water, same with the coldness of the water. I'm used all year, making me tired. I feel disgusted when it comes to bath tubs. It makes me go ewww. But when it comes to privacy it's worse! |
