This week...Monday Samuel W. Shaw Band Concert Perspective Writing Tuesday Jumpingpound Demonstration Forest Wednesday Being a Problem Finder Thursday Buddies Friendology Friday No School PD day Jumpingpound Demonstration Forest Field TripAre you ready? Do you have your backpack? Do you have proper running shoes? Do you have a good lunch and snacks? Do you have water? Sunscreen (the weather is looking good)? Do you have clothes in case it gets cooler or rains? Do you have your visual journal and pencil? Don't be late for school on Tuesday...buses should be ready for us around 8:30. See you in the morning! We had a blast! The weather was amazing - sunny and hot. We met some great educator guides (Wendy and Cailey) who led us through a day of learning. We started our day with an orientation and safety information. We loved wearing our high visibility vests. Then we walked to our first stop to discuss where we were. Did You Know the Jumpingpound Forest was a Buffalo jump and is on Treaty 7 land? Then we spent some time getting to know the trees. We took turns being blindfolded. The person without the blindfold introduced their partner to a tree. Then we moved away from the tree, spun out blindfolded partner three times and they had to find the same tree based on their senses. We moved to a new spot and took in the view. Did You Know the mountain in the background is Moose Mountain? A scavenger hunt is always lots of fun. It allowed us to investigate the area we were in and take some time to have a closer look. Life in the forest in balance...the life cycle of a tree! Did You Know that this is a nurse tree? Ask me why it is called this. This is a dichotomous key. We used it to figure out what type of plants we were looking at. With this dichotomous key, it was easy to identify the plants. Lichen is one of the plants we saw in the forest. Did You Know lichen is a decomposed? Do you know what a squirrel midden is? Ask me, I do. Can you see where it is in the pictures? Look carefully. Is this a piece of decomposing tree or a bone from an animal? We picked it up and had a closer look. We wrapped up the day by talking about what the forest provides us with and who are the users of the forest. It is clear that the forest requires humans to live in balance with it so that it can continue to provide us with oxygen, lumber, water, and much more. Being a Problem FinderWe debriefed from our field trip to Jumpingpound Demonstration Forest and discussed what we learned and whether we enjoyed our time in the forest. Then we shared what problems we saw in the forest. We are going to investigate these problems in more depth and see if we can find possible solutions; Design Thinking will help us think about this process. Butterfly MathWe have spent some time trying to solve a 3-act problem in math. We have had to use estimation and multiplication to work through the problems presented to us. First we watched a slow motion video of a butterfly flapping its wings. We counted that it flapped it's wings 14 times in 1 second. We gave a low estimate, a high estimate and then a reasonable estimate. Next we used the 14 times in one second to determine how many times the butterfly would flap its wings in 1 minute. Did you know 1 minute is the same as 60 seconds? We then learned that a butterfly can actually flap its wings between 5 and 12 times in one second. How fast they move their wings depends on whether they are fighting a head wind, flying leisurely or trying to escape a predator. We had to then figure out again how many times they could flap their wings in one minute. We used our multiplication skills again. Our last challenge was to see how many times we could flap our wings (arms) in one minute. Healing Hearts - Trustee PresentationMr. Wilcox asked our grade 4 students to share their journey on how we came to create our book so it could be shared with the school board trustees on May 22. Ethan, Lucas, and Tyleigh will share our journey with the trustees. If you are interested in watching the presentation, it is being live-streamed around noon on May 22nd. We are so very proud of our grade 4 students and the work they have done this year. Here is what our students are going to say on Monday:

Listed below are the recommended gear parent volunteers and students should bring on Tuesday. We will review this list again on Monday. Make a BuckWe practiced adding decimals today by playing the game, Make a Buck. All you need is a deck of cards and a partner to play. The goal of the game is to be the first player to have exactly $1.00 in your hand. Materials: deck of cards partner to play with Skill Focus: adding decimals mental math Rules: 1. Decide who goes first 2. Ace = $0.01, Two = $0.02, Three = $0.03, … Tens = $0.10, Jack = $0.11, Queen = $0.12 and King = $0.13. 3. Shuffle the deck and deal ten cards to each player. 4. Players then take turns drawing and discarding one card at a time until the deck of cards is depleted or a player collects exactly $1.00. 5. The first player to collect ten cards that equal $1.00 wins that round and earns 1 point. 6. The player with the most points at the end of ten rounds wins! Our Trip to the Glenbow MuseumWe spent the day learning about the Blackfoot people’s way of life and got a chance to get close to some artefacts. We also learned more about why people came to Canada and what their journey might have looked like. We looked into some of the suitcases from the newcomers and we were able to piece together where they were from and who was in their family and how they may have made a living. What is your story? What would you bring if you were only allowed to bring three items? How would these items tell your story? Class Photos - Wednesday May 8Class photos are tomorrow! We will have our photos taken before we leave for the Glenbow. It is super important that all students arrive at school on time so they don't miss out. Our bus leaves at 8:45am from Bridlewood School. Pictures will be around 8:20 tomorrow morning. Friendology 101 - The 4 Friendship FactsMondrian Art - adding decimalsWe created Mondrian inspired art back in March. We used the art to look at fractions. Now, we are using the art to look at decimals. If we know our canvas was 10x10, there must be 100 individual squares. So, if each square is worth 1 penny, then the entire painting would be worth 1 dollar. Students went around to all of the paintings and added up how much each colour was worth in cents. The next step was to add up each colour to see how much each colour was worth in dollars for all the paintings. Theoretically, if we have 26 paintings, the total value for all the paintings should be $26. You will see, some paintings don't have a value of $1. Why would not all the paintings add up to $1? Where could the error be? What is the total cost of each colour? What is the total cost of all the paintings? WastebustersHi Bridlewood School! The Wastebusters plan to host 'Wasteless Wednesdays' every Wednesday from now until the end of the school year. We are hoping to reduce the amount of garbage that we contribute to the landfill. On Wednesdays, please bring a waste free snack and lunch (that means everything is compostable, reusable or recyclable). Thanks for your help in reducing waste at Bridlewood School! Glenbow Museum InformationBus leaves for the Glenbow at 8:45am from Bridlewood School Bus leaves for Bridlewood School at 2:10pm from the Glenbow Museum Here are some ways to help your child have an enjoyable and memorable trip: Eat a healthy breakfast. There often isn’t time for morning snacks. Make sure your child eats a big, healthy breakfast. Prepare for the day. Ask your child what they might see at the museum. Refer to previous visits to Glenbow or other museums. Ask what might be important rules to follow while on a field trip. Dress appropriately. In programs at Glenbow Museum, we often spend much of the time sitting on the floor and we do lots of exploring. Make sure your child wears appropriate clothing and shoes. Follow up at the end of the day. Find out what they learned, explored and discovered. Bring the rest of your family and ask your child to share some of what they learned on their field trip. Local Social Action TeamHi Bridlewood! The Local Social Action Team would like to extend a huge THANK YOU for your donations to support the Alpha House! With our successful Used Book Fair and Bake Sale, we have raised a total of $1644.50 for the Alpha House! This money will support individuals with resources to help their mental health and addictions. Once again, THANK YOU BRIDLEWOOD SCHOOL!
