We were inspired to write a book after reading These are My Words and watching The Lie. We wanted to do something to support Reconciliation. What is Project of the Heart? (www.projectofheart.ca) Project of Heart” is an inquiry based, hands-on, collaborative, inter-generational, artistic journey of seeking truth about the history of Aboriginal people in Canada. Its purpose is to:
Students first completed a piece of art using pastels and black paint to create a Batik. These art pieces were the first step. Then students began writing about What Matters - what really matters. They created statements or acrostic poems to share their thoughts. We are going to put these pieces together to create a book that we can publish. More information will be coming home tonight via a letter. Please look for the letter in your child's backpack. Fraction Strips/TowersHow do Fraction Strips help students? Fraction strips help students to visualize and explore fraction relationships. They allow students to develop a concrete understanding of fractions and mixed numbers, investigate equivalency, compare and order fractions and explore number operations with fractions. Fraction strips help students by allowing them to manipulate parts of the same whole. By their very nature they keep the whole consistent for students. ~EduGAINS Try this... Students predict which fraction s larger: 2/3 or 2/6? Students use the strips to test their predictions and discuss what they notice? Students order various fraction amounts from greatest to least, explaining what they notice about the denominators. Stories in Grade 4Plant Growing in Grade 4Students learn about the structure and growth of plants by raising plants in the classroom and by observing plant growth within the community. They learn to recognize and describe different forms of leaves, stems, roots and flowers and learn their functions in supporting the growth and reproduction of the plant. They learn various ways of starting new plants and the plants’ requirements for growth. Through hands-on activities, students learn that different plants have different needs, and they gain skills and attitudes for their care. Parkland ResearchMondrian Art for FractionsMondrian’s artwork is such a great choice. Between his signature use of blue, red, white, yellow and black colors; his work is typically gridded blocks of color. It is easy to see how students can create their own artwork in this style to demonstrate fractions.
