Do you know your basic multiplication facts? All grade 4 students are expected to know their basic multiplication facts up to 7x7. In grade 3 students learned up to 5x5, so this is only two more facts set. Students should also be able to use the multiplication table to figure out 8x8 and 9x9. This would be a great skill to practice at home.
We also looked at the relationship between multiplication and division as they are fact families. Simple Machines Speed ChallengeOur challenge was to build a device using a lever and wheels that is able to launch an object. I should be able to identify the lever, fulcrum and load as well as explain how it works using scientific language. The wheels should allow me to move my device and the lever to launch an object considering a target for accuracy and distance. Residential School SurvivorGrade 4 Glenbow Field Trip - CANCELLED for tomorrowDear Parents and Guardians, At this time, Calgary Board of Education schools will be open as usual on Thursday, February 8th, but the CBE is closely monitoring the weather conditions and will provide an update if a decision is made to close CBE Schools. Regardless, given the winter storm warning issued for tonight and tomorrow, we are not comfortable sending our students on field trips, as we take the safety of our students seriously. As a result the grade 4 field trip to the Glenbow Museum will berescheduled. We believe it would be unwise to have students travelling around the city with the heavy snowfall expected. At this time we will hold the funds and reapply them to the field trip when a date can be confirmed with the Glenbow Museum. I sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may cause you, especially those parents that had volunteered for the trip. If a decision to close schools is made, parents should watch their email for updates from the CBE. Information about any closures will be posted on the CBE websites and shared with local media. Respectfully, Jason Secret Alberta: The Former Life of Amber ValleyDid you know? February is Alberta Black History Month. We watched the video to learn the stories of the people who lived in Amber Valley. We learned that the settlers were fleeing racism in the United States. We learned that Albertans weren’t happy with this black community and didn’t want anymore to come. We learned that Amber Valley is no longer a black community. We also learned that three Mavericks came from Amber Valley: Vie King (the first black, female appointed to the bar in Alberta), Oliver Bowen (an engineer and helped design the LRT), and Floyd Sneed (a member of the band 3 Dog Night). After watching the video, students discussed what they learned. Many were surprised to hear that Alberta has a black history. . Then they were off to write. They were asked to write three paragraphs. First, they summarized what the video was about. Second, they made a connection to the video (text-text, text-world, or text-self). Finally, students shared what they wondered. Patient Problem Solving - round 1There is more than one way to solve this problem! We discovered this today. How would you solve it? Where would you begin? Patient Problem Solving - round 2Can you build a rectangle to represent the number 56 using base-ten blocks? Is there more than one possibility? What would the multiplication equation(s) be? From Ms. SwansonTomorrow, Wednesday February 7, 2018 is Winter Walk Day. Winter Walk Day is celebrated by schools across Canada on the first Wednesday of February each year. It’s the perfect opportunity to encourage our students to get outside and get some fresh air and be active during the winter, especially with the Olympics starting on February 9th, 2018. It helps our students get those 60 minutes of daily physical activity they need. It also helps students get rid of the winter blues and help them concentrate better in class. Please ensure your child/children dress warm tomorrow by having a warm coat, mitts/gloves, boots, warm pants, toque and possibly a scarf. Each class will be going out on their own for their Winter Walk. Let’s be one of the many schools participating on Winter Walk Day and have some fun! Mrs. Swanson Mini Kick Off Celebration for the OlympicsOn Thursday February 8th, 2018 Bridlewood is going to have a mini kick off celebration for the Winter Olympics. Ms. Swanson is bringing together the students or a quick slide show celebration to get the students involved in the Olympics on Wednesday, February 7th (rooms 1 and 2 plus the grade ones due to the field trips.)
We are hoping students will wear red or white on Thursday to represent our Canadian athletes. |
